HOW TO PARTICIPATE: Tweet anything you appreciate about healthy forms of masculinity, re-tweet others that you like, and don’t forget the hashtag: #HealthyMasculinities. Bonus points for Sexual Assault Awareness Month tag: #SAAM.

In support of Sexual Assault Awareness Month, we here at Men’s Anti-Violence Education Network (MAVEN) are coordinating a Twitter Trending Topic! Our plan is to flood the twitter-sphere with tweets promoting aspects of positive masculine identities at 10am PST on Wednesday, April 18th. A concentrated effort at 10am will help our chances of reaching “Trending Topic” status, but we’ll be tweeting about it all day. If enough people participate, it could become a global intervention!

We are all experts, even if only subconsciously, on the ways our society and culture condition us into rigid gender roles. Men are required to perform a singular and impossible role of ‘traditional’ masculinity that often encourages violence. But messages about positive alternatives aren’t nearly as common, and we need more developed concepts to replace the tired ideals. Let’s give healthy masculinities a little more presence in the world in a way that only Twitter can accomplish!
